Job Summary:
The Child Life Specialist is responsible for providing psychosocial support and therapeutic interventions to children and families in various healthcare settings. This role requires expertise in child development, psychology, and family systems to promote emotional well-being and minimize stress during medical procedures. The Child Life Specialist collaborates with healthcare professionals to create a supportive environment that enhances coping skills and improves the overall experience of pediatric patients.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement age-appropriate therapeutic activities, interventions, and play opportunities to help children cope with medical procedures, hospitalization, and illness.
- Assess and address the psychosocial needs of pediatric patients and their families through individual and group interventions.
- Utilize knowledge of child development theories to plan and implement developmentally appropriate interventions that support emotional expression, mastery, and understanding.
- Collaborate with healthcare professionals, including physicians, nurses, and social workers, to ensure holistic patient care and effective communication.
- Create and maintain a child-friendly and safe environment within the healthcare setting, including playrooms, waiting areas, and patient rooms.
- Provide emotional support and education to families, empowering them to participate in their child's care and decision-making process.
- Document patient interactions, assessments, and interventions accurately and in a timely manner.
- Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, case conferences, and staff education programs to enhance the quality of care provided.
- Stay up-to-date with current research, best practices, and industry trends in child life services to continuously improve the quality of care provided.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Bachelor's degree in Child Life, Child Development, Psychology, or a related field. Master's degree preferred.
- Certification as a Child Life Specialist (CCLS) through the Association of Child Life Professionals (ACLP).
- Minimum of 2 years of experience working as a Child Life Specialist in a healthcare setting.
- Thorough understanding of child development theories, family systems, and psychosocial needs of pediatric patients.
- Proficient in assessing children's emotional and developmental needs and implementing appropriate interventions.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with healthcare professionals, children, and families.
- Strong organizational and time management skills to prioritize tasks and manage multiple responsibilities effectively.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Compassionate, patient, and empathetic approach to working with children and families in stressful situations.
- Proficient in using relevant computer programs and electronic medical records systems.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as required.
